The Kaiwaka Lantern Festival is scheduled for the week prior to Matariki. The lantern parade around the village and the after-dark fire based activities are directly associated with Matariki themes celebrating light and regeneration.
This year we are hoping to see the community respond with more lanterns than ever. All ages, please join in: You are invited to be as creative or adventurous as you like!
The only conditions are as follows:
· Portability: This is a walking parade: no wheeled carts or vehicles of any sort. The parade route passes along the kauri bush track, under bridges, and climbs over unpaved surfaces. Make your lantern small enough and light enough to deal with this;
· Safety & appropriateness: Always consider the safety of the other parade participants (many of whom are children). This is a community and family participation event open to all;
· Tidy: We must leave the grounds and parade route as clean as we found it;
· NO NAKED FLAMES (or other fire risks)
